Timing is everything, especially when it comes to a major change with this year’s coming delivery of holiday baskets by a Pauls Valley food pantry.
The Pauls Valley Samaritans have announced there won’t be any of those traditional baskets when the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday rolls around next month.
The reason is simple — there won’t be enough time between the Thanksgiving and Christmas basket deliveries for the Samaritan pantry to restock the shelves.
“The Samaritan board has decided that because there’s not a lot of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas we won’t have time to restock,” said Lou Hall of the Samaritans.
“It’s not that we don’t have the resources. We just don’t have the time.”
A peek ahead on the calendar shows next month’s Thanksgiving Day will come on Nov. 28, which is the fourth Thursday of the month.
That compares to years past when the holiday fell on the third Thursday of November.
With less time in between the holidays the Samaritan board has chosen not to make any Thanksgiving basket deliveries this year.
Instead the focus will be on stocking up shelves in preparation for the Christmas drive that provides food for low income families here in PV.
That means the estimated 250 food baskets delivered during last year’s Thanksgiving drive won’t come until the Christmas holiday in December.
Despite the decision Hall stresses the community has again been very supportive of the Samaritan effort.
Case in point came during this fall’s church drive for donated food.
“We had a good response to Samaritan Sunday,” Hall said, referring to the late September event with food donations being made at local churches.
“We’re very grateful for all the donations and food; for the great response from the community.”
Next month the Samaritans are expected to again get even more help with food drives organized by local schools.
Although there won’t be a holiday basket drive for Thanksgiving this year there will still be help out there as the Samaritans will continue to provide food on a regular basis to Pauls Valley residents who qualify by being eligible for food stamps.
That help can come simply by calling the Samaritans at 405-238-2432.
The Samaritans are also supporting the free Thanksgiving dinner program offered each year by the local Cornerstone Community Church and the weekly Monday lunches provided by Grace Baptist Church located just east of Pauls Valley.
As for the Samaritans’ Christmas food drive, this year those baskets are scheduled to be delivered on Dec. 19.
