Car takes Paoli woman for a ride

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — It was unusual to be sure when a Paoli woman was dragged by her own car after she stopped to check for a flat tire.

The bizarre incident took place Sunday night as 66-year-old Shirley Jennings was dragged for an undisclosed distance as her car rolled off a highway.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol report shows Jennings was alone while driving a 2013 Dodge Avenger northbound on U.S. Highway 77.

At a listed time of 11:41 p.m. Oct. 27 the vehicle came to a stop in the roadway just a few yards north of Paoli.

As Jennings was attempting to get out of the car to check for a possible flat tire her jacket apparently got caught on the vehicle’s gear shift.

That caused the vehicle to then shift to reverse as it began rolling backwards.

As the vehicle rolled backwards it dragged Jennings down off the roadway into a ditch.

Then it was the car’s turn as it came to rest in the ditch pinning the woman between the driver’s door and the ground.

Jennings was believed to be pinned there for about 15 minutes before being freed by bystanders.

The woman was taken by a Pauls Valley E.M.S. ambulance to Norman Regional Hospital.

She was admitted in stable condition with arm and leg injuries, according to the OHP report.

Investigating the unusual incident was OHP Trooper Tommy Riddle of the Garvin County Detachment.

Assisting at the scene were Garvin County deputies and Pauls Valley and Paoli fire personnel.
