Main Street continues to improve with paint — There are countless enhancement projects in any community where supporters would leap at a chance to be fully funded in an instant. However, often just as much good is done from a series of smaller improvements.

One such example which has been utilized time and again by Main Street Pauls Valley is the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Fresh Paint Days Grant, which has over the past six years at least put a refreshing face on several buildings in the downtown area. It’s not a project about the big check, but sought out by Main Street directors from across the state that continued recently with the announcement of the two latest local recipients.

“We’re given limited selection of colors and business owners pick what works for their purposes,” said MSPV Director Samantha Robb. “Main Street directors from every county in the state apply.”

The two locations approved include the marquee sign at Clutterbugs, formerly the Swap Shop, at 215 W McClure and the building currently in use by “The Light” youth ministry along West Charles.

Like those that have applied before, the grant goes to communities that can best explain what the particular spot means to local residents through the necessary paperwork as well as how it will benefit them to see it receive a fresh coat of paint.

It is the second such project MSPV participates in on a yearly basis, the other being their trash off related activities and in the past has included other businesses like last year’s Your Framer and the building that is now the Boom-a-rang Diner, said Robb.

It’s also a way to build a little bit of pride in one’s community by being personally involved in improvement.

Once a business qualifies for the grant, all adding up to 20 gallons of the preferred color, they then recruit volunteers to help them paint the outside of said structure and provide things like scaffolding or boom lifts, said Robb.

For The Light, this will include beige as the base and then later include murals all around, and for Clutterbugs it will be a snazzy new sign.

Main Street also gets a stipend to help pay for painting supplies like drop cloths as well as brushes and a good bit of it is donated through H.I.S. Paint in Oklahoma City.

“It’s more about encouraging people to roll up their sleeves and help people,” said Robb, noting how they even will try to find ways to do improvements with the paint left over.

“We’re going to give you some materials so you can put some equity back into your community.”

Robb expects to hear within the next week or so when the paint is available and once the project has been completed, she will put together a report with photos to be sent to Keep OK Beautiful. This will put them into consideration for awards from the organization and the end hope is to encourage by proxy other local individuals to do some improvements on their own.

“We even get consideration for Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Awards,” said Robb. “Hopefully it will create a trickle-down effect.”
