Two major phases may officially be over but efforts to make improvements at Garvin County’s courthouse building are far from done.
All three county commissioners gave their OK on Monday for the purchase of more than 100 new windows to go into all three floors of the courthouse in Pauls Valley.
The approval was for a bid of nearly $84,400 from Pauls Valley Glass. Coming the courthouse’s way are 106 new windows — 48 on the third floor, 21 on the second and another 27 on the ground level.
County Clerk Lori Fulks said at the weekly meeting a few other courthouse windows have been replaced in recent times.
These new ones give courthouse employees the option of opening or closing the windows. Up to now the building’s windows have remained sealed.
“We’ve replaced some of the windows over the years so that we would be able to open them,” Fulks said.
“That’s what these new ones will do, allow us to open them if we need to,” she said. “We’re looking to make the courthouse look better.”
As part of that goal efforts may get underway this fall to repair and seal the exterior of the courthouse, along with a complete makeover to brighten up the building’s appearance on the outside.
These projects are really just a continuation of two completed phases of courthouse improvements with all of it paid for by a seven-year half-cent county sales tax passed by voters in 2007.
Half the funds generated by the tax have gone for the general maintenance and operation of the courthouse.
The other half is split between a supplemental funding source for county roads and the operation of the county sheriff’s department and jail facility.
“I feel like we’ve spent our money wisely,” District 2 Commissioner Shon Richardson said.
“We’ve taken care of some issues that need to be done.”
Funding for the courthouse improvements have paid for two large-scale projects in recent years.
The first provided the courthouse with a new elevator constructed outside the main structure, a brand new roof, upgrades to the electrical and plumbing systems, a new boiler system, some restroom renovations and improvements to the heating and cooling system.
The second phase combined a number of handicap related upgrades with a few others left out of that first series.
The tax paying for all these improvements is scheduled to end in 2014.
