Teacher named tops at Whitebead

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — These screams were for joy as the second-graders in Belinda Hunt’s class reacted to hearing their teacher’s name for a special honor at nearby Whitebead School.

The kids weren’t shy about expressing their excitement Monday morning as Hunt was announced as the winner of Whitebead’s teacher of the year.

Hunt was among four “delegates” for the honor as it was her who took the spotlight during a special gathering of students, school staff and parents.

The honor came as a surprise to Hunt, a veteran of the classroom for more than three decades.

“It’s a special honor because it’s being recognized by your peers,” Hunt said moments after the big announcement.

“We have lots of outstanding teachers here at Whitebead, so it’s a really big honor to be named teacher of the year,” she said.

“The best part of it was to see the excitement on the faces of my students.”

Hunt was the school’s delegate for lower grade teachers.

Other Whitebead teachers named as delegates were Carolyn Tompkins, middle level teachers; Kim Pool, upper grade teachers; and Linda Williams, auxiliary teachers.

Whitebead’s principal, Mary Smith, knows what it’s like to be given the honor of teacher of the year.

“This is recognition from your peers,” Smith said.

“When I was given this honor as a teacher I saw it as my peers valued what I did and what I brought to the educational table and what I can share,” she said.

As for the school’s teacher of the year, Smith says teachers must have been at the school for at least three years to be nominated.

She has high praise for this year’s winner of the top teacher honor.

“Belinda has a world of experience in education,” Hunt said.
