Delta Transit good for director’s soul

emann@pvdemocrat.com — A smooth transition is all any organization can hope for when new leadership comes in to replace those who have long made an impact.

This seems to be the exact case as things have rolled right along for Garvin County nonprofit Delta Public Transit, ever since Jackie Perry became the latest transit director earlier this year. Stepping up in place of Susan Coldwater, who left for another career opportunity back in May, she officially took over in September.

Perry said she chose to pursue the position as a personal challenge that builds on a love she’s had for helping people for her entire career.

“I like working with and helping people,” Perry said. “Helping people is good for the soul.

“I’ve been working with community action for 11 years so I love what I do.”

Perry was previously the housing director for Delta and since arriving to the Garvin County entity back in 2011, she has enjoyed her time working in Lindsay as it is closer to her home in Washington, which is only a 20-minute drive away.

She noted how it is a much more comfortable environment than the hustle and bustle she would deal with when she worked with community action in Oklahoma City.

“I like the smallness, the agency here is tight nit,” said Perry. “We watch out for each other and take care of each other.”

Perry noted how while the organization will help people of all walks of life, a majority of the people they serve are seniors whose ability to be active in the community depends on their Delta’s busses and the fee of $1.50 to ride in the communities they serve.

One way Perry is already capitalizing on that love of helping people recently got underway here in Pauls Valley through the organization’s annual Stuff the Bus drive.

This year will focus mainly on collecting nonperishable foods instead of the clothes drive they usually have, but that’s not to say they won’t accept a coat or two if people are inclined.

She added how they have been approached more and more recently due to economic conditions as well as demands that peak around the holidays and this drive will help them restock and serve instead of turning people away.

“Any time we’ve gone over and asked for something like this, PV has just stood up and stuffed the bus,” said Perry, elaborating that all people need to do to participate is bring their canned or boxed items to a pre-designated bus parked at the Pauls Valley transit office at 215 W Paul.

“You’ve got your winter months coming up and you hate to turn anyone away… we just don’t want to get low.”

The bus can be stuffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bus rides can be scheduled during the week anytime from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
