Traffic death case gets a start

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The defendant in a negligent homicide case has made his first appearance in a Garvin County courtroom since the formal charge related to an Elmore City woman’s death was filed last fall.

Pleading not guilty was Shawn Adams, 30, of Copperas Cove, Texas to the misdemeanor count accusing him of causing the traffic accident that claimed the life of 46-year-old Georgina Ann “Jeannie” McCurley nearly a full year ago.

It was back on Aug. 15, 2012 when the tragic accident took place on state Highway 29 a few miles west of Wynnewood.

The charge against Adams alleges he made an unsafe left turn, resulting in a two-vehicle collision that ended with McCurley’s death.

A few months later, Oct. 29, prosecutors filed the single misdemeanor count of negligent homicide - motor vehicle against Adams in Garvin County District Court.

During Adams’ courtroom appearance a disposition hearing in the case was set for Aug. 21.

A filed affidavit shows Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Tommy Riddle responded to the accident in the morning hours at a site on SH 29 just west of Interstate 35 in front of a Shell gas station.

The trooper learned Adams had been driving a tractor-trailer rig that was turning into the station’s parking lot when the accident occurred.

He reported there was damage to the front driver’s side of the tractor truck, while the mid-size car driven by McCurley sustained massive front end damage.

Pauls Valley and Wynnewood firefighters worked for a reported 1 1/2 hours using a Hurst tool to extricate McCurley from the wreckage.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by a state medical examiner’s official from head and trunk internal injuries.

Adams was reported to have told the trooper he was headed to the station to get something drink and simply didn’t see McCurley’s vehicle approaching when he made the turn. McCurley was traveling eastbound at the time.

The trooper’s official conclusion was Adams was the one responsible for causing the deadly accident because of the unsafe turn.

In the initial report on the accident Riddle listed in-attention as the cause of the accident. He also concluded the truck driver was the only one wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
