Rodeo action returns to PV — The wild and fun action of the rodeo returns to Pauls Valley with the Thunder in the Valley event next weekend.

This 12th annual Thunder event, sponsored by the Pauls Valley Rotary Club, again pits 40 riders against 40 bulls with an attitude when the two collide on Saturday, May 3.

It also features the always popular mutton bustin’ event as youngsters get on the backs of sheep for wild rides on the dirt of the PV Round-Up Club Rodeo Grounds located near the local Wacker Park.

In recent years the bullriding event has come after Pauls Valley’s big community festival, BrickFest, was held earlier in the day.

That’s not the case this year as BrickFest will come this October.

Local Rotary member Allie Burgin doesn’t believe the absence of the day-time festival will have any impact on the evening rodeo.

“I think we’ll still get the attendance,” Burgin said. “I don’t think it ever played off BrickFest. A lot of people who had come to BrickFest were just too tired to go to the rodeo.

“I don’t think not having BrickFest on that day effects our attendance.”

One thing that is for sure — a lot of folks are hoping for good weather. That’s a factor with a definite impact on the rodeo event.

Burgin says it’s typical to have around 700 people attending the event; that is unless the weather goes south making it feel more like winter time outside.

Last year is a prime example as unseasonably cold weather cut attendance in half. Previous years have also been plagued by inclement spring weather.

If all goes well things get started at 3 p.m. when the mutton bustin’ sign up begins for kids age 3 to 7 weighing under 55 pounds. They must be entered no later than 4:45 p.m.
