Craft fair a real family thing — Combining crafts and a little fun is what a Pauls Valley group is all about as an upcoming event is meant to get a few kids ready for school next month.

A craft fair set for Saturday, Aug. 3 is not only the idea of Ashley Brumley it’s kind of a family thing as she looks to help some kids get ready for school with a backpack and school supplies.

The fair is meant to help Brumley’s grandfather, James Tobey, who at the local King’s Kids activity center has in recent years been quietly helping kids get ready for another year of school.

Brumley’s idea is to add to her grandfather’s efforts by organizing a craft fair at the center located at 122 West Charles.

Her idea is simple — the more proceeds that can be raised from the fair the more kids who get a backpack and the supplies.

“We’re raising money for backpacks for families in need,” Brumley said.

“This is because I wanted to help my grandpa raise money for the backpacks,” she said.

“He did this last year but it was very discreet. Basically he did it for families of kids who came into King’s Kids all the time.

“For this one we wanted to do the same thing only a little bigger.”

The craft fair itself is scheduled to go from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at the King’s Kids center.

A number of booths are lined up to take part in the fair offering various craft items just for starters.

“It will be kid friendly with snow cones, baked goods and we’ll have clowns and they can play,” Brumley said about the kids.

Those interested in taking part are asked to contact Tobey at the center in advance.

That, Brumley said, will allow enough time to get the backpacks and school supplies ready on the day of the big fair.
