Big election day comes this fall

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — This fall’s election season has picked up in a big way as four towns in Garvin County will hold special votes.

The big day is Sept. 10 as elections are now planned for a city sales tax proposal, a multi-million dollar school bond issue and two town council seats that need to be filled.

At stake here in Pauls Valley could be the fate of the local hospital.

Going before local voters is a half cent tax proposal that if approved would go to support Pauls Valley General Hospital.

Members of the PV City Council voted by a 4-1 count to have voters get their say on making the tax a permanent one.

If the tax is given the OK by voters it wouldn’t become effective until Jan. 1, 2014, allowing the city of Pauls Valley to actually start receiving revenue from it in March next year.

Another big issue on the September ballot is a bond issue for the Elmore City-Pernell School District.

The $7.51 million issue, if passed by at least 60 percent support, would go to construct a new gymnasium and convert ECP High School into a separated middle school and high school building, according to the documents filed with the Garvin County Election Board.

The ECP issue is spread out in 15 different series over a five-year period.

Voters in Stratford and Lindsay will also head to the polls on Sept. 10 as vacancies on town councils in both cities need to be filled.

Both vacancies are for two-year unexpired terms.

The three-day filing period for prospective candidates in Stratford and Lindsay is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 12-14 at the county Election Board in Pauls Valley.
