Blown tire causes wreck on I-35

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — A passenger was seriously injured when the vehicle he was riding in sustained a tire blow out over the weekend in northern Garvin County near Paoli.

Hurt was 20-year-old Erick T. Lakey.

Lake was riding in a 1994 Ford Explorer, which was the only vehicle involved in the accident Saturday afternoon, July 20.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Curtis A. Orr, 22, also of Wilson, was driving the vehicle northbound on Interstate 35.

At a listed time of 1:11 p.m. Saturday the vehicle ran off the left side of the highway because of a blown tire at a site a couple of miles north of the Paoli exit.

The vehicle was then overcorrected in an attempt to re-enter the roadway.

When the vehicle did get back on the road it went into a broad slide overturning nearly two full times before it came to rest on its side.

State troopers reported Lakey, who was not wearing seatbelts, was ejected from the vehicle for an unknown distance.

Lakey was later airlifted from the wreck site and taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

An OHP report shows he was admitted in serious condition with head and trunk internal injuries.

Also listed as not wearing seatbelts was Orr, who still was only treated and released after being taken to Pauls Valley General Hospital by way of a Pauls Valley E.M.S. ambulance.

The official cause of the accident was listed as “unsafe vehicle - tires,” while the driver, Orr, was listed in the report as “apparently normal.”

Investigating the crash was OHP Trooper Doug Brinson of the Murray County Detachment. Others assisting were Garvin County deputies and Paoli firefighters.
