Pauls Valley, Oklahoma —
Tragedy hit closer to home as one of two victims from an area house fire this past weekend was from Elmore City.
The fire in neighboring Murray County claimed the lives of Jess Horstman of Elmore City and Kylie Andrews of Washington. Both are 19 years old.
Authorities released the two names of the victims in the fire at a rental home between Joy and Wynnewood on Sunday.
Both Horstman and Andrews are reported to have died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, according to the state medical examiner’s office.
All reports show a total of five people were asleep in the house when the fire began around 6 a.m. Sunday.
Two from the group reportedly awoke first and saw curtains on fire. They then alerted the others inside the structure.
Three people escaped from the house, while Andrews is reported to have been attempting to wake up Horstman. The two could not get out of the house.
Officials with the Joy Fire Department reported the house was full engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Malfunctioning wiring was cited as the cause of the fire, according to the state fire marshal’s office.
Authorities added the house did not have any smoke detectors.
