No charges in jail death case — Any potential criminal case is over before it starts when it comes to a woman who died earlier this year while being held in Garvin County’s jail.

A prosecutor here has announced his decision that no criminal charges will be filed in the death of 33-year-old Jamie Lynn Russell.

Russell died the night of Jan. 2 while incarcerated in the county jail located in Pauls Valley.

Mark Gibson, an assistant district attorney in Garvin County, said all reports supplied by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation led to his decision that criminal charges were not warranted in this case.

Put simply, he concluded Russell’s death was a tragedy involving nothing criminal.

“Based on the OSBI reports the young woman died of natural causes,” Gibson said on Wednesday.

“There was no evidence of any criminal conduct by any person or agency that contributed to her death,” he said.

Gibson described it as a “complete investigation by the OSBI,” which he said included interviews with staff from the state medical examiner’s office in Oklahoma City.

The assistant DA added his decision likely won’t be impacted by a final report from that same office at some point in the future.

Events leading up to Russell’s death started when she was taken to Pauls Valley General Hospital back in early January complaining of stomach pain.

Police reported Russell was uncooperative with hospital staff and was later arrested when they found prescription pills that did not belong to her.

Russell was taken to county jail and placed in a holding cell prior to completing the book-in process. She then reportedly went to sleep.

A couple of hours later detention deputies noticed Russell was unresponsive as resuscitation efforts began immediately and an ambulance was called to the scene. She was pronounced dead after being taken to the same local hospital.

Medical examiner officials ruled the cause of death was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
