Special ‘trash’ show seeks recycled art — Pauls Valley’s growing reputation as a city that loves to recycle will soon be getting a boost from the local art scene.

Pauls Valley Arts Council President Mike Dyson is building from the successes of the Trash in Fashion Show and the annual Trash Off Parade. He is inviting those with the desire to create to be a part of the next big step.

The call is out to begin crafting all manner of works, reusing anything imaginable, for the “Trashformation Art Show.” The show is scheduled from April 25-26.

“One of our goals is to bring awareness about recycling in our town,” said Dyson, “We’ve been successful with Trash in Fashion, but we wanted to try something different.”

Dyson has been working on a creation of his own from litter he has collected from walking around town. He said using any item lying around should make it easy to meet the 75 percent recycled material minimum of a piece.

“I really think this kind of art has become popular,” said Dyson, who said his work would be some kind of collage. “Hopefully it will act as an incentive to attract visits from all over.”

Cost will be $20 for the first three entries, and $5 for each additional entry. There will be a limit of five total pieces that can be entered.

In the end, Dyson said getting this idea going helps him look at what was once just throw away in a new light. “it can still find a purpose.”

One day he wouldn’t mind seeing artwork from the shows being displayed at the Pauls Valley Arts and Cultural Center downtown.

There will be first through third place awards for both a youth (7-12th grade) and adult divisions. The ultimate prize for best in show is $500. This will be done during the opening night, Friday, April 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. with refreshments served and guests are asked to also drop by Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
