PVGH looking to turn around ER problems — With the passage of the half-cent sales tax, Pauls Valley General Hospital has a little more comfort when addressing lingering concerns.

Areas of focus include turning around a less than satisfactory situation in the emergency room. Also upgrading the surgical side of operations.

Interim PVGH CEO Jim Clough noted, that this would no longer be acceptable. As a result, exploration to improve things from the ground up is already underway.

“We are dealing with ongoing problems as far as our emergency department,” said Clough.

“We have complaints frequently and we need to do a total performance improvement initiative in that area.”

Clough noted that EmCare has been discussing the inconsistent quality of customer service and what they can do to correct it.

This includes a plan of correction to monitor every aspect regularly. It will be a long, hard process to change an unhealthy culture.

“I told them it was not going to be business as usual,” said Clough. He noted that some of the bad impacts have included a high turnover of emergency room practitioners.

“We pay a lot of money for their service. We expect them to get their act cleaned up and provide a much higher act of service.”

According to Clough, improvements will include adequate policies and procedures during a patient’s registration. This includes the staff that sees them, to dealing with areas like financial councilors and medical providers.

The ultimate objective is rehabilitating the image and reputation. Next is completing an accurate medical record on time.

They are working on optimizing coding and billing. Plans are to make sure performance indicators are met for each area and accountability is assigned to each employee.

Plans for the surgical suite have been waiting on review for quite some time now. This includes meeting with the state department of health to determine the parameters needed in order to get started again.

They were caught off guard the first time they asked for approval. The detailed report turned in needed additional information.

Nabholz Construction was named construction manager at Tuesday night’s Hospital Authority meeting.
