Council candidate being contested

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The changes keep on coming for a special election date in September that once upon a time included four Garvin County cities.

Set this week for the Sept. 10 ballot was a council race in Stratford that now could potentially go away as the qualifications of one candidate are being contested.

Just one day after a three-day filing period closed the candidacy of Randall Jolley was officially questioned by the other candidate, Sean McKinney.

In an official petition contesting the candidacy, McKinney claims his opponent has not been a registered voter long enough to qualify for a race involving an elected office.

“This candidate is not a qualified elector by virtue of not being a registered voter within the municipality or ward for at least six months prior to filing a declaration of candidacy,” McKinney stated in the petition.

Members of the Garvin County Election Board will settle the issue as a hearing has been scheduled for early Monday afternoon, Aug. 19 at the county courthouse in Pauls Valley.

Both McKinney and Jolley filed earlier this week to run for the Ward 1 Board of Trustees office in Stratford that is currently vacant and includes a two-year unexpired term.

Once council race that does look to be on is in Lindsay, where Scott McPherson and Ronny Harrell are going to compete for an unexpired term there.

The September election date is also still good for voters in the Elmore City-Pernell School District who will decide the fate of a school bond issue.

The $7.51 million issue spread out over a series, if passed by at least 60 percent support, would go to construct a new gymnasium and convert ECP High School into a building with separated areas for middle school and high school students.

The special election used to also include a proposed sales tax measure in Pauls Valley intended to support the local hospital.

Not anymore, as the half cent sales tax measure meant to support the operation of Pauls Valley General Hospital has for now been rescinded but is expected to return later, possibly in the fall.

Another special election could come later in the fall for voters in yet another area city.

After the resignation of three council members in Maysville an election has been scheduled for Oct. 8 to let voters choose their replacements.

The filing period for prospective Maysville candidates is Aug. 26-28 at the Election Board office.
