Kiddos honor vets with song — Using music to learn some important lessons and honor military veterans is the idea behind a program at a Pauls Valley school.

Music teacher Charla Forrester and third-graders at Jackson Elementary have been busy this week practicing for a program, complete with songs and heartfelt messages, to honor all vets and military personnel.

The program was held Thursday, Nov. 7, in the school’s auditorium.

“I believe this program is not only important for the students but it’s important for adults,” Forrester said.

“Given the nature of the holiday, the Veterans Day program is more of a solemn and reflective program than a Christmas or spring program would be,” she said.

“The intent of the program is to honor our fallen troops; honor, thank and salute our veterans; and remember our troops who are currently serving in the military.”

It was a couple of years ago when Jackson principal Mitzi Winters asked Forrester what she thought about a program presented by third grade students designed to honor military veterans.

Forrester agrees it was an easy call as the program has since become a part of the school’s regular activities.

“I thought it was a wonderful idea because the third grade students would have the opportunity to thank the veterans and military men and women,” she said.

“Third-graders are old enough to begin to learn and understand we have freedoms and rights and privileges in our nation that people who live in other nations don’t have.”

During the program the youngsters sang what their teacher says are a couple of “fun” songs with a few others “more serious in nature.”

On a couple of songs students used lights and small American flags.

“The students are really excited about that,” Forrester added.

Veterans or military personnel attending the program had reserved seats and were recognized for their service.

Students also made cards to be presented to the honored guests, Forrester said.
