‘12 Years a Slave’ worth a look, not a stare
I can count a great number of films I would have picked over many that win the best picture honor in any given year, but there are quite a few that I would concede do deserve nomination.
‘Dallas Buyer’s Club’ soars with powerful characters
While I tend to try and point out that Texas isn’t entirely filled with bigots (Some of the jerks are actually nice people when they aren’t rooting against the Sooners), I’d be lying if I said I never met more than a few in my travels.
‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ overloaded, but still improved
As Fox Television (or network TV in general) has largely burned through most of my petty complaints toward entertainment conglomerates, these days I tend to give things like the web crawling franchise reboot a pass.
‘Walter Mitty’ an amazing portrait of ambition
While there are a certain crop of actors/actresses that don’t suck making a career out of being the same exact person in every movie they make, it’s still nice to be pleasantly surprised when one of them breaks the mold successfully.
‘Saving Mr. Banks’ once again shows how art shouldn't always imitate life
When the cold bitter weight of life collapses on you like a freezer full of cheap burritos, sometimes the best thing to do is go and see a movie.
‘Book Thief’ an underappreciated gem
The atrocities and crimes committed during the Nazis’ rise to power may be one of the most documented time periods for cinema, but that does not mean that all the great stories have been told.
‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win
Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
‘CA: Winter Soldier’ a salute above the average sequel
It’s become pretty ridiculous how good Marvel is getting at making hero movies some of the best released flicks for nearly two decades.
‘Noah’ character a victim in flood epic
Color me one of the biggest fans of movies with a heavy dose of social commentary on man’s stupidity.
‘Divergent’ only as terrible as the audience you see it with
There is a certain level of tolerance I’ve built up when it comes to the chick flick genre, but there are just some occasions where the temptation to poke fun at it is too hard to resist.
