Vera M. Turner

Vera Turner of Elmore City, Oklahoma was born to William Arthur and Nellie Sally (Horton) Cassell on July 10, 1916 in Granite, Okla., and passed from this life on July 12, 2008 at her home at the age of 92 years.

Mrs. Turner grew up and attended the Staley school near Purcell, Okla. On October 8, 1940 she married Ben Turner in Pauls Valley, Okla., and together made their home in Lawton, Okla., before moving to Elmore City.

Mrs. Turner worked at the Pauls Valley State School and retired in 1973. She also did a great deal of farming, ranching and taking care of her home. She was a member of the Satterwhite Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized at the age of 16.

Mrs. Turner enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting and canning food. Mrs. Turner was well known for her pecan pies and loved to cook.

Mrs. Turner is survived by two daughters: Sally Martin and her husband Keith of Elmore City, Oklahom, and Linda Harmon Couch and her husband Gary of Purcell, Okla.; two sons: Joe Turner and his wife Donna of Elmore City, Oklahoma, and Benny Turner and his wife Sue of Elmore City, Oklahoma; one brother: D.J. and Jane Cassell of Allen, Okla.; two sisters: Vena Howard of Elmore City, Okla., and Willie Nel McKee abd her husband Troy of Elmore City; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband: Ben; infant son: Joseph William Turner; one granddaughter: Chanda Turner; her parents: William and Nellie Cassell; one brother: Venita Cassell; one brother-in-law: Lester Howard; and one son-in-law: Geral Harmon.

Funeral services for Mrs. Turner are scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Elmore City First Baptist Church with Dr. Bruce McCray officiating.

Interment will be in the Elmore City Cemetery under the direction of Wooster Funeral Home. You may send a condolence to the family at www.woosterfuneralhomes.com.
