Pauls Valley Democrat
Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Ava Jo Camp passed away at her home in Wynnewood, Oklahoma on Sunday, March 17, 2013 after a three-year, hard fought battle with cancer. She was only 62 years old.
Ava Jo was born to Joe Bailey and Ava Nell Riddle on November 27, 1950 in Sulphur, Okla. She earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from East Central University in Ada where she met Roger Camp. The two were married on June 10, 1972, and on October 9, 1974 they were blessed with a baby girl, Jennifer Nell Camp.
Ava Jo was a first grade teacher for over 30 years. She invested countless hours as a dedicated teacher, and as acclaimed by many, she made a difference in the lives of her students. In a fitting display of recognition, Mrs. Ava Jo Camp was honored with the 1986-1987 Teacher of the Year Award from Wynnewood Public Schools.
After retiring in 2004, Ava Jo could be found landscaping and gardening around her house. Under her dark wood pergola and around her pristine lawn, she was proud of the hours she spent creating her own backyard paradise of colorful flowers and carefully manicured poolside trees.
Yet, above all else, her single biggest joy in life came from her family whom she loved unequivocally - her husband, Roger; her daughter, Jennifer; and most especially her grandchildren, Cole and Beau.
They were always together in life, and they were with her, holding her hand, at the difficult end. Her legacy of graceful tenacity and charming determination as a wife, mother, and grandmother will live within them forever.
Ava Jo is survived by her husband Roger; one daughter Jennifer Sparks of Norman; two grandchildren Cole and Beau Sparks; one sister Holly Colbert and husband Chic of Owasso, Okla.; nephew Ryan Riddle of Norman, Okla.; niece Rachelle Riddle Metcalf of Norman, Okla.; sister-in-law Gayla Riddle of Ada, Okla., and her three children Lindsey, Hunter, and Bailey.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe Bailey and Ava Nell Riddle, and her two brothers, Ralph “Speedy” Riddle and Brock Riddle.
Services were held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Wynnewood, Okla., officiated by Lynn Phillips and Todd McRay.
Burial follwed at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, Okla. Services are under the direction of DeArman Funeral Home of Wynnewood, Okla.
