Pauls Valley Democrat
Pauls Valley, Oklahoma —
Mary Kate Morris, 87, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 after a 6 month struggle with lung cancer.
She was born on September 16, 1926 in Lockport, La., to Frank Kirby Cole and Bessie Leonard Higginbotham Cole.
Mary was raised in various Texas towns from Longview to Mexia and many places in between, as her father traveled around the state working contract jobs in the early Texas oil fields. After attending Texas Women’s University, she later moved to Oklahoma, where she lived the majority of her adult life; first in Ada, then in Pauls Valley.
Mary was affectionately known by her family as “Mom,” “Nana” and “Aunt Mary.” She lived her life each day appreciating every moment and encouraged her family and those around her to do the same. She was an avid reader and was the volunteer library coordinator at Donahue Senior Apartments for the years she lived there. She was highly skilled and talented in the crafts of sewing, crochet, and needlework. Her afghans and doilies were always beautiful works of art.
She is survived by her four children: Ben Morris, Bruce Morris, Margee Ratliff, and Brown Morris; two nieces and one nephew: Melanie Cole, Margaret Rabito, and Steve Daughdrill; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
During Mary’s final months on this earth, she was cared for by some extra special angels. The family would like to thank Dr. Whitehouse, the staff of Lifecare Hospice, especially Hollye Piepke, Ramona Henry, Marsha Williams, and the staff of Pauls Valley Care Center. They truly made a positive impact during her journey to the end of her life.
The family will be having a celebration of life in the near future in Mexia, Texas. No local services will be held.
