Geneva Blackwell

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Geneva Wahoma (Yoakum) Blackwell was born October 17, 1920, in the Signal Hill Community near Rosedale, Oklahoma. She passed away on December 3, 2012, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 92 years.

Geneva was the daughter of Dennis A. and Eva Velma  (Jay) Yoakum.

Upon her graduation from Rosedale High School in 1938, she moved to Oklahoma City where she worked as a secretary in the public school system.

She married Troy Blackwell, her husband of 69 years, on September 6, 1941. She worked at the Douglas Aircraft plant near Oklahoma City during World War II and then with John A. Brown & Co. in Oklahoma City. Geneva was also employed at the University of Oklahoma during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.

In 1956, Troy, Geneva and family moved from Oklahoma City to the family farm east of Wayne, Oklahoma.

She resided here, working alongside Troy and their four children through the years, until failing health necessitated her moving to an assisted living center in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma in 2011. Further health challenges resulted in her moving to a nursing facility in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, in the final months of her life.

Geneva was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wayne, Oklahoma, for over 50 years. She delighted in her children, grandchildren and extended family, and enjoyed cooking delicious meals for them and the many friends that came with them to her table.

Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, two brothers Harold and Bland Dale and two sisters Dennisteen and Frankie Vandale.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Carolyn and Jim Lester of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; three sons and daughters-in-law: Alan and Joleta Blackwell of Wayne, Oklahoma,  Rick and Melonie Blackwell of Sparks, Oklahoma and Bob and Fonda Blackwell of Wayne, Oklahoma; one brother: Dennis J. Yoakum and wife Hazel of Purcell, Okla.; two sisters-in-law: Ludia Yoakum of Pauls Valley, Okla., and Betty Cotten of Tulsa, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2012 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel.
