Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Tom Gibson (Uncle T), 65, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Tom passed peacefully and in his sleep, ending a 32-year battle with kidney disease and subsequent cancer.
Tom was born April 2, 1948 in Pauls Valley, the son of Warren and Jenny Gibson.
Tom graduated from Pauls Valley High School in 1966 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Tom was an active athlete participating in football and baseball and was the State Junior Bowling Champion in 1964.
Like his father, brother, son, nephews and cousins, Tom was an avid golfer enjoying many competitive rounds with his friends and family.
Tom was a certified diesel mechanic and eventual service manager for Ryder Truck Rental in Oklahoma City. He later was service manager and partner with his brother at Cimarron Truck Rental before kidney disease ended his working career in 1981.
Tom is survived by his son Warren Thomas Gibson II; his daughter Angela; granddaughters Gabrielle and Mandy; his brother Dan; nephews Jeff, Danny and Matt; his cousins Gene and Joe Latimer, Alan and Kathleen Gibson, second cousins Lou Hall and Jim Lindsey; his great nephew Bo; his great nieces Scotland and Natalie, and his soon to be great niece, Emma.
In addition to his family, Tom appreciated and was grateful for many friends and supporters during his illness, including his longtime doctor, Chris Sholer, MD, his good friend Donnie Brim, and Jaylene Sain, his caregiver and personal angel. His family is indebted to them as well.
Tom will be remembered for his happy, younger years in Pauls Valley and Oklahoma City as well as the years spent fighting poor health.
In spite of 30-plus surgeries, three failed kidney transplants and years of dialysis, Tom remained a kind and gentle soul, loved by many until the end. Rest in peace Brother Tom and Uncle T.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19 at the pavilion at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Pauls Valley.
