Elbert Alan (Bert) Humphrey

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — LTC (Ret.) Elbert Alan (Bert) Humphrey of Norman, Okla., crossed over from this life to the next on October 11, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 71.

He was born November 21, 1941 to Wm. E. (Bill) and Mary E. (Mamie) Humphrey of Pauls Valley, Okla., where he was raised.

He was a lifelong member of The First Christian Church, a Boy Scout, a football player, and a member of The Order of Demolay. He attended Pauls Valley Elementary, Junior High, and High School. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he met and later married the love of his life, Patricia Kay Humphrey (McCord).

After graduating, he proudly volunteered for service in the U.S. Army, where he served faithfully for over 28 years, serving 2 tours in Vietnam as an Airborne Ranger.

During his career, he was awarded 3 Bronze Stars for Valor, The Defense Meritorious Service Medal, 5 Meritorious Medals, The Air Medal, 3 Army Commendation Medals (1 for Valor), The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with Silver and Bronze Stars, 3 Overseas Service Ribbons, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, The Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device, and The Vietnamese Ranger Badge.

He was a graduate of the NCO Basic Course, Infantry School, Airborne School, Ranger Course, Jumpmaster School, Ranger Instructors Course, The Infantry Officers Advanced Course, and The Armed Forces Staff College.

After he retired, he continued to serve his country as a contractor with the Department of Defense, The American Legion, The Disabled American Veterans, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, as President of the Oklahoma chapter of The US Army Rangers Association, The Cleveland County Election Board, and The Rotary Club.

He loved watching football and old Westerns, a good single-malt, traveling, golf, and telling war stories.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, their daughter Brooke Ryan, their son and daughter-in-law Blayke and Catherine Humphrey, and grandsons Ciaran Ryan and Elliot Humphrey as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and his brother William (Bill) Humphrey.

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013 at First Christian Church of Norman, 220 S. Webster. Interment with full military honors is at 2 p.m. at Ft. Sill National Cemetery, 2648 Dunn Rd, Elgin, OK. Hooah!
