Greg Nation

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Gregory Charles Nation, 55, born August 30, 1958 in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Jimmy Charles Nation and Barbara Lee Nation (Pistole), passed away on September 22, 2013 from acute onset of non-alcoholic cirrhosis and complications from this unknown condition. Greg passed peacefully with his children at his side and sister on the phone.

A Celebration of Greg’s Life was held on Monday, September 30 at the First Presbyterian Church, 301 N. Walnut in Pauls Valley with Rev. Tom Buzbee officiating. A light reception in the church fellowship followed the service.

Greg is survived by his father, Jimmy Charles Nation of Dallas, Texas; sister Tracy Lynn Nation of La Jolla, Calif.; children Shannon Simone Nation, Tyler O’Neil Nation and Kelly Lynn Nation of Pauls Valley or OKC, and granddaughter Haven Quinn Nation-Shafer.

Predeceasing Greg was the love of his life and mother of their children, Tina O’Neal Nation; his beloved and devoted mother, Barbara Lee Nation Marquardt; and cousin Mark Nation.

Also surviving Greg are Uncle Fred Day of Pauls Valley; Aunt Doris Nation of Biloxi, Miss; cousins Doris Dean Nation of Biloxi, Miss; Freddy Day Jr., Tommy Day, Gary Nation, Danny Nation, and Joe Nation, all of Oklahoma; cousins Ben Davis, Sheryl Davis Martin, and Debbie Davis Evans of California and New Mexico; second cousins Marci Warren (Nation), Bobby Dean Nation and Marshall Nation.

Greg fought valiantly for 7 weeks prior to being hospitalized for 30 days. We feel Greg would want people to know more about this disease that at the time symptoms began, caused end-stage liver decease and bilateral renal failure.

Only those present could know the fight Greg waged and the trauma his body sustained.

At his side throughout were Kelly Nation and his father, who for a two week stretch in the middle of Greg’s stay, was there morning until well in the night.

In total, Greg’s father made 3 trips from Dallas. Shannon was due to give birth at any day. Tyler was working full-time, often 6 long days a week. Sister Tracy was beginning treatment for breast cancer.

We want to thank the visitors, especially those who visited frequently: Chris Evans, Angie Pickard Brown and Rev. Tom Buzbee.

Greg was a humble man. He could not quite get the fuss over all the messages of prayers and encouragement that poured in from social media. But, he liked them one and all. Thank you to all who visited, sent messages and cards, called and text’d. Greg found them very encouraging.

Greg graduated from high school in 1976 from Pauls Valley. He lettered in football and wrestling and was quite a force to oppose.

He started in the trucking business during high school, starting out hauling short haul freight with Manning Trucking. He remained in the trucking business all his life. He drove long-haul carrying cattle, produce and box goods from Florida to Montana and from the East to West Coasts.

Greg married Tina O’Neil in 1989. They raised three children. After becoming a family man, he began short haul driving, servicing oil and gas exploration, hauling mainly rock and water. Greg lived the last 3 years of his life in Norman, although he worked all over the state.

Greg loved the freedom of driving, just like his Grandfather Virgil Nation, a house mover back in the day, and Father Jim Nation who traveled the Gulf Coast and Southwest, while in the men’s fine clothing business. Like all of the family, Greg was also a Christian.

Greg turned 55 on August 30. He was able to celebrate with his father, sister and children present. He became a grandfather during his sickness. Haven Quinn Nation-Shafer, born August 25, made him even prouder; he was overwhelmed each time he laid eyes on her.

During the last 10 years of his life, Greg spent non-working time taking care of his wife Tina, who was ill. Greg never got over losing Tina in October 2009. Indeed, Greg suffered a double loss at that time because his mother passed 3 days earlier.

Certainly, there is no question that Greg was most proud of his three children and he fought to the death, literally, to remain on this earth with them.

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge God’s will that it was time for Greg to come home and be at perfect peace in all ways. We will miss his big hugs, goofy ways and his sheer presence in our lives. Rest easy son, brother, daddy and Poncho.
