Gladys McCowen

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Mrs. Gladys Jo Wilson McCowen, 83, was born to Joe and Lullene Wilson on February 17, 1930 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.

She began her schooling at Dunbar School. After graduating from the 8th grade as class valedictorian, she entered Lincoln High School in Wynnewood. Gladys served as school song leader, senior class president, junior class secretary, soloist in the Glee Club, secretary of the 4-H Club, and president of the New Home Makers of America.

She graduated from Lincoln High School as class salutatorian.

She attended Langston University where she was instrumental in organizing the New Home Makers of America. In that capacity, she traveled to many Southern states working under the leadership of Mrs. L. Gandy. While at Langston, she also served as assistant Matron of the University of Women from 1954 -1955.

Gladys began her Christian walk with God at an early age. She attended Sunday School at Bethlehem and united with the church in 1941.

In her many years at Bethlehem, she served as Sunday School and Baptist Training Union (BTU) secretary, Women’s Mission Union (WMU) 1st Vice President, Vacation Bible School teacher, BTU Junior Class instructor, and choir soloist.

She also served as corresponding secretary of the Chickasaw District Association. Gladys received many certificates in religious courses at the State Congress of Christian Education.

Gladys married Rev. D.D. Jones in 1949, and he preceded her in death.

As a young widow, she returned to Pauls Valley in 1955. She became active in all phases of school activities at Dunbar Elementary School. She served as a Cub Scout Den mother, Girl Scout leader, and president of the Dunbar Parent Teachers Association (PTA).

Gladys married Prince Hill in 1970, and he preceded her in death.

Gladys brought life to eight children; one son Ray Clayton Jones preceded her in death.

For 20 years, Gladys was employed at the Pauls Valley State School. She entered the nursing program at Mid America Vocational and Technical School in 1975 where she served as class vice president.

After nursing school, she became the supervisor of the night shift at Pauls Valley State School. In that position, she served for 6 years. She became the day shift supervisor for Turner Clinic nursing department in 1982. She also served on Unit Team, staff nurse for Gary and Junior Cottages, and was subsequently transferred to Multiple Unit where she served as staff nurse. She retired in 1986.

In 1986, she moved to California where she was united in marriage to Rev. Hosia McCowen, and he too preceded her in death.

While in California, she joined in fellowship with Macedonia Baptist Church in Compton, where she served as recording secretary of the Pastor Aid and Chaplin for the nurse’s guild.

She served every 2nd Sunday as nurse in attendance and worked Health Fair Expo. She also served as a volunteer for the Carson New Year’s Rose Bowl float in 1991, and her float received the President’s Award.

After the death of her husband, she returned to Pauls Valley and reunited with Bethlehem where she served in any way she could.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and 9 siblings.

She is survived by her 7 children: Earlene (Allan) Ridley, Hawthorne, California, William (Audrey) Jones, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Rev. G.W. (Martha) Jones, Starkville, Mississippi, Harold Jones, Washington, D.C., Jocelyn (Terrall) Rushing, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, La Deat Jones, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, and Gladys Marie Hill, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 4 sisters: Zoe Wilson, Long Beach, California, Susan Douressaou, Beaumont, Texas, Jane Williams, Oklahoma City, Jackie Jackson, Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; one brother John James, Hawthorne, California; and scores of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Light of the World Pentecostal Church of God officiated by Pastor Michael Eaton, Rev. Kirk Rushing, Rev. Charles Ledbetter and by her son, Rev. G.W. Jones.

Interment was at Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
