For the first time since the Canadian Valley Conference formed, the No. 10 team Pauls Valley Lady Panthers won the conference championship after a 63-62 win over No 15 Blanchard.
Pauls Valley was the winner of the south division of the conference and Blanchard was the north division winner. The two met to determine the overall conference champion at the Event Center in Washington Saturday.
Blanchard jumped out early in the game with a 7-0 run behind Carly Craig's two three-pointers. Jordan Humphrey got the Lady Panthers on the board with a basket at the midway point of the quarter. Blanchard opened up a 10-2 lead and led by 10 points before a Mikayla Mullen three-pointer late that cut the lead to 17-10.
PV had a chance to close the gap at the start of the second quarter but only hit 3-of-8 free throws. Blanchard's lead grew to 9 three minutes in but PV scored six straight to close the gap to three at the four-minute mark of the second.
PV continued to inch closer and a three-pointer by Mullen cut the lead to one 25-24. Blanchard finished the quarter on a 10-6 run that gave them a 35-30 halftime lead.
Pauls Valley started the second half with an 8-2 run for their first lead of the game. The run extended out to 16-3 as PV opened up a 46-38 lead. Cailen Jolley and Maci Riddle had 7 points each in the run.
PV's lead grew to 9 points at one point in the third quarter but Blanchard hit five straight in the final minute including a Craig three-pointer at the buzzer that cut the lead to 51-47.
Blanchard continued with chipping away at the lead and after four straight free throws in the middle of the quarter trailed by only one, 56-55.
Aylin Nunez gave PV a four-point lead with two minutes remaining on a steal and layup. With under a minute to go Blanchard cut the lead to two on a Brittney Garrett basket.
Blanchard was forced to foul to stop the clock and they fouled Katlyn Davenport with 30 seconds left. Davenport nailed two free throws for a 61-57 lead. Kylie Vaught answered for Blanchard with a basket and Blanchard fouled Davenport again with 17 seconds remaining. Davenport calmly sank two more free throws for a 63-59 lead.
Blanchard's Garrett hit a three-pointer with 5 seconds remaining. After a timeout, PV got the ball in and ran out the time for a one-point win.
Pauls Valley had four girls in double figures with Riddle leading the way with 14. Jolley and Davenport had 13 points each and Mullen chipped in 12.
Garrett led all scorers with 22 points and Craig added 16 for Blanchard.
