Dream season ends for Panthers

The dream season came to an end for Pauls Valley Thursday night in the Area Consolation opening round against the Cache Bulldogs.

Five senior starters — Matt Harding, Stephen Ford, Santiago Hernandez, Josh Rolan and DeLance Howard — and a sixth senior, Tyler Reed, played in their final game of the season ending one of the best seasons in Pauls Valley history.

The Panthers finished with 22 wins, the most at the school under head coach Chris Caldwell.

“I’ve never had a group of kids that worked as hard and together as a team like these guys,” head coach Chris Caldwell said.

“They have been the most enjoyable group of young men I’ve ever coached.”

A slow start by the Panthers was all the Bulldogs needed as they took the lead early and never relinquished it in an 80-70 win.

The Bulldogs full court pressure created eight first quarter turnovers and set the tone for the game. Pauls Valley recovered and had only 10 turnovers in the final three quarters combined.

Cache used the turnovers to their advantage with some easy baskets and some baskets out of their half-court offense.

The Bulldogs built a seven-point lead in the first quarter, but Ford’s baskets late cut the lead to three before Quickley hit a basket at the buzzer to put Cache up by five points.

Sophomore Caleb Livingston cut the lead to two early in the second quarter with one of two three-point baskets for the Panthers.

Cache then went on an 11-2 run that pushed their lead to 11 with two minutes remaining in the first half. Hernandez ended the run with a pair of free throws and Howard hit a three pointer in a 7-2 run to end the quarter that cut the six at the break.

Cache came out firing in the second half with five straight points that built their lead to as many as 14 points on a couple of different occasions in the third quarter.

Matt Harding got the Panthers rolling late in the quarter as they scored six straight and that led to a 20-6 run over the final two minutes of the third quarter and first three minutes of the fourth quarter.

Harding had six points in the run and Hernandez had six straight points late in the run to cut the lead to 57-56.

Lockwood hit a three pointer to end the run and start a 15-8 push that gave Cache an eight-point lead with two minutes to go in the game.

Pauls Valley was forced to foul to get the ball back late and Cache made them pay with eight straight free throws.

Pauls Valley wasn’t able to get back in the game losing a 10-point decision to the Bulldogs.

Four of the five senior starters finished in double figures with Harding and Ford both leading the way with 16. Hernandez had 15, 13 of those in the second half and Rolan finished with 11. Howard finished with three after scoring 21 in Saturday’s win.

“It’s going to be tough to replace these guys,” Caldwell said about the seniors.

“This group has been in the gym every chance they could get since the seventh grade. I finally had to make them keys for the gym cause I got tired of driving to town and opening it for them.”
