Pitching duel ends in extra innings

By Mike Arie
Sports Editor

The aces brought their A game Tuesday afternoon in the Pauls Valley Panthers home opener with rival Wynnewood.

Senior Josh Rolan for Pauls Valley and senior Chad Pruitt for Wynnewood battled on the hill for six innings before Rolan left the game in his first start of the season.

The result up until that point, both gave up one run on a couple of hits.

The game went into the eighth inning where Wynnewood plated three runs for a 4-1 win.

Pruitt got the win pitching eight complete innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out seven and walking only one.

Rolan got a no decision as he gave up a run on three hits with seven strikeouts.

Caleb Livingston led off the bottom half of the first inning with a double to the center field wall. He moved to third on Dylan Norman’s ground out and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.

That’s where the scored stayed until the top of the sixth inning.

Aaron Gilbert hit a full count pitch the opposite way over the left field wall tying the game at 1-1.

Both teams had opportunites to score during the time between runs but neither could get anything across.

Both teams stranded two runners on the base paths during that time including runners in scoring position.

Rolan pitched to one batter in the seventh inning getting an out on a roller back to the mound.

Freshman Dylan Norman came on to pitch and worked out of a bases loaded jam with a pair of strikeouts.

Sam Halverson reached to start the seventh inning for the Panthers on the only Pruitt walk of the game. He couldn’t get advanced around and the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Gilbert led off the inning by reaching on an error. Broderick Bumpass then singled and Puritt walked to load the bases.

The Panthers brought in Gage Leadford and Ross Underwood greeted him with a double to center field that scored both Gilbert and Bumpass. Puritt would later score on a ground out for a 4-1 lead.

Pruitt worked a 1-2-3 eight inning striking out the final two outs of the game.

Wynnewood finished with five hits by five different batters. Gilbert’s home run and Underwood’s double were the only extra base hits of the game for the Savages. Bobby Rushing, Mitchell Dodds and Bumpass all had singles.

Pauls Valley finished with two hits, a double by Livingston to start the game and a single by Caleb Sharp in the bottom of the second.

Pauls Valley will be on the road Thursday as they travel to Wayne for a 4:30 p.m. game.
