Noodling Tournament looks to be best ever

By Jim Richardson
Staff Writer

It’s sure to be another day of unforgettable fun, food and festivities when Bob’s Pig Shop in Pauls Valley hosts the 9th Annual Okie Noodling Tournament and Fish Fry.

The big event is set to take place on Saturday, July 12, and Pig Shop owner, Phil Henderson, said the lessons learned during the last eight tourneys should help organizers pull off their best tourney ever.

“This year’s tournament and fish fry is going to be bigger and better than ever. Eight years have taught us a lot of stuff so it should be smooth as silk,” Henderson said.

“We expect a lot more people and we’ll still be having some of the standard activities people enjoy like a fish fry, live band, noodling exhibitions and the noodling queen contest.”

Henderson said last year’s noodling competition was stifled somewhat due to a rash of severe storms but, with favorable weather in the forecast for the weekend, it is very possible that 2008 noodling tournament-goers could witness the largest catches to date.

“Last year we had a lot of rain. The rivers and creeks were swollen and the lakes were very high and a lot of noodlers couldn’t get to their usual noodling spots.

“This year we don’t have any heavy rains in the forecast and the lakes and streams are at a moderate level so noodling should be very good,” Henderson explained.

“Matter of fact, I’m expecting a new tournament record. The old record is 60.2 pounds and I really expect that to be broken this year.”

Henderson said activities kick off at 5 p.m. with a fish fry and catfish weigh-in. At that time visitors can get a close-up look at some of the largest catfish they will ever see in their entire lives.

At 6 p.m. visitors will have a chance to witness noodlers in action as hardy men and women plunge to the bottom of a specially-designed glass tank to retrieve large catfish using nothing more than their bare hands.

According to Henderson, live music, noodling awards and the Noodling Queen competition will round off the evening and festivities should wrap up around 11 p.m. or “whenever the crowd thins.”

Anyone interested in competing in the noodling competition must register before 7 p.m. Friday, July 11, and submit an entry fee of $25. Registration may be done over the Internet by logging on to okienoodling.com or by calling Bob’s Pig Shop at 405-238-2332.
