Wynnewood back in action

After canceling last week’s game with OCS because of flu like symptoms for the Wynnewood, the Savages will be back on the field Friday night in district action.

The last time Wynnewood was on the field they picked up a big district win over Dewar.

This week WW is on the road at Konawa looking for another district win to keep pace in the district race.

“We are sitting third in the district right now,” Savage head coach Brad O’Steen said.

“There is a possibility that if we run the table we could win the district. And there is a possibility that if we lose one we can finish second.”

But the Savages can look ahead as they take one game at a time, including a young Konawa team Friday night. The Tigers start several sophomores and a couple of freshmen.

“They are young but they did beat a pretty good Wewoka team,” O’Steen said.

The Tigers will run a power I at the Savages behind a huge offensive line.

“They are big and physical up front,” he said. “They average about 270 across the front but they still get off the ball well.

“They will run the ball over 80 percent of the time. Their fullback runs the ball hard and the tailback is about 190 and he runs the ball well. Their quarterback has the best speed on the team and we will have to contain him.”

Defensively, Konawa relies a lot on their linebackers.

“Their two inside backers are pretty good,” O’Steen said.

On paper, the Savages should win this game but they still have to go and play the contest.

“If you match us up on paper, we are supposed to win,” O’Steen said. “We have to go and take care of this game and not get caught looking down the road.”

Wynnewood and Konawa kick off at 7:30 p.m.
