Savages hold on for win

A late turnover almost cost the Wynnewood Savages. A defensive stand turned away the Stratford Bulldogs as they were knocking at the door of the end zone as the Savages escaped with a 13-6 win.

Stratford got a turnover late when they stripped a Savage back. The Bulldogs moved the ball down to the five-yard line but the Savage defense made a stand and Stratford turned the ball over on downs and WW turned away the chance to Stratford to tie the game.

The Bulldogs went to work early in the game scoring on their first possession. Tyler Mills capped off a drive with a five-yard run to pay dirt. The conversion pass failed as Stratford took a 6-0 lead.

Wynnewood would answer back late in the first quarter. Chris Scott caught a short pass out in the flat from Blake Perry. Scott would break several tackles on his 72-yard journey into the end zone. Dalton Wilcox booted through the extra point kick for a 7-6 lead.

That’s where the game would stay until the middle of the fourth quarter. Cortez Allen would be the recipient of a Perry pass that went 53 yards for the touchdown to give the Savages a little breathing room.

Stratford would have two possessions in the final five minutes but couldn’t find the end zone and the Savages picked up a huge district win.

With the Wynnewood win that puts three teams in a tie for the remaining three spots in the district. If everything plays out like it is supposed too, Stratford could still finish second with a win next week of four points or more. Wynnewod would need a Stratford loss to finish second but look to be playoff bound.
