Lady Panthers knock off defending state champ

Lady Panthers beat Wayne

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The Pauls Valley Lady Panthers got off to a great start in their road trip knocking off the defending state champ Sulphur Friday evening in semifinals of the Marietta Tournament.

The Lady Panthers continued to play well beating the Lady Bulldogs 44-33 for their second straight win.

Pauls Valley got off to a good start with Abigail Grimmett scoring 4 points and Kallie McMahan and Kaylee Lambeth scoring three points each. The Lady Panther defense held Sulphur four points in taking a 10-4 lead a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Lady Panther defense held Sulphur to only 3 field goals in the first half but a bevy of free throws by the Lady Bulldogs kept them within striking distance.

Sulphur scored 11 points in the second quarter nine of which came from the free throw line.

The Lady Panthers had balanced scoring in the second quarter with seven different girls hitting the scoring column led by McMahan who had 3 points. PV took a 22-15 lead into half time.

The Lady Panthers kept Sulphur at arms length in the second half. McMahan had 9 points in the half to finish with a game high 15. Williams and West both had 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs for the only other players in double figures.

Pauls Valley will play in the finals Saturday afternoon in Marietta.

Lady Panthers beat Wayne

The Pauls Valley Lady Panthers broke open a close game late to win their first game of the Marietta Tournament 47-38 over the Wayne Lady Bulldogs.

Mary Beth Balcerak had one of her best game offensively with a team high 10 points. She shared that honor with Kaylie Lambeth who also had 10 points in the win.

The game was back-and-forth for the most part until the fourth quarter.

Pauls Valley looked like they were going to pull away just before the half as they had the ball and a six-point lead.

A turnover led to a Wayne basket and a second turnover just before the half led to a Caleigh Clifton three pointer at the buzzer that cut the lead to one.

Pauls Valley opened back up a slight lead in the third only to have Wayne cut the lead back down and trail by only three heading into the final quarter.

Pauls Valley was finally able to pull away in the fourth as Abigail Grimmett got hot scoring all six of her points in the quarter. PV pulled away in the win for a nine-point win.

Pauls Valley defeated Sulphur in the semifinals to advance to Saturday’s finals.
