Mike Arie
Pauls Valley Democrat — After saying his team must get off to a much better start then they have been, the Stratford Bulldogs responded to coach Michael Blackburn in a big way.

The Bulldogs scored 43 points in the first quarter of Friday’s game with Marietta and rolled to a 49-21 win.

Kyle Qualls had 267 yards rushing and five touchdowns to lead the offense and a stingy Stratford defense gave up 251 total yards in offense and only two touchdowns. The third Marietta touchdown came on a kickoff return near the end of the first half.

“We got off to a much better start this week,” Stratford head coach Michael Blackburn said. “I was proud of the guy’s effort and execution. We now get back into district play for the rest of the way and travel to Wayne for a huge district game this week.”

Stratford got started early as they scored on their opening drive. Qualls capped off the scoring drive with a 1-yard run.

On the Bulldogs next possession they struck again, this time through the air as Chase Bradstreet hit Kyler Wade in stride and Wade raced 65 yards for the touchdown.

Marietta scored right before the end of the first quad on a 68-yard run by Cash Lang to cut the Bulldog lead in half.

Qualls would score three straight touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Early in the second, He raced in from 75 yards out. Later in the quarter, Qualls had a six-yard run for a touchdown and less than a minute late he score again this time from 71 yards away.

Qualls would score again just before the half on a 40-yard run and Stratford took a 43-14 lead at the break.

In a two-minute stretch of the final three minutes of the first half, Qualls would score three times and have over 150 yards rushing on three carries.

Montie Thomas got into the act early in the third scoring on a 51-yard run for the Bulldogs.

Stratford would call off the Dogs after that and Marietta would get a late touchdown to make the final 49-21.

The Bulldogs finished with 535 total yards, 438 of that on the ground. Thomas added 106 rushing and a TD, Jacob Compton had 50 yards, Wade 7, Lane Martin 4 and Isaac Miller and Daylen Wood 2 yards each. Bradstreet was 3-of-6 for 97 yards. Wade had all three receptions from Bradstreet.

The Bulldog defense was led by Compton who finished with 8 tackles. Kyle Potter and Kyle Wright had 5 tackles each. Potter and Eli Savage both recovered fumbles and Matthew Blackburn had an interception.
