The Pauls Valley Panther offense came to life Friday night with 35 points but the defense couldn’t stop the explosive Lone Grove offense in a 72-35 loss to the Longhorns.
The sophomore laden Longhorns used a second half outburst by sophomore tailback Jeremy Lewis. Lewis scored four touchdowns in the second half to turn a tight game into the route. Lewis had five touchdowns on the night and finished with over 250 yards rushing.
Pauls Valley’s offense moved the ball against the Lone Grove defense running a passing the football. PV converted on 5 fourth down plays in the game to keep drives alive.
Lone Grove took the opening kick off and marched down the field and scored on a 17-yard pass from Grant Harman to Rowe.
Lone Grove would add a late touchdown in the first quarter as Harman rushed in from 3 yards out for a 14-0 lead.
Pauls Valley would start a drive late in the quarter and early in the second Carter Tate rushed in from 3 yards out for a touchdown.
Lone Grove would come right back with Lewis scoring from 78 yards out.
The Horns would score again as Harman hit Harris with a 67-yard touchdown pass.
Pauls Valley would come right back with a 5-play 54-yard drive. Tate had a big pass play to James Jones and Jake Hamilton had a big run that moved PV inside the 30.
Coleton Jolley capped off the drive from 11 yards outs scoring off tackle.
Lone Grove came right back scoring off Harman 31-yard TD run and a 35-13 lead.
Pauls Valley used their two-minute offense to march down the field. They kept the ball on the ground and used a 20-yard run by Jace Elkins to cross mid field to the LG 35.
The drive almost ended with a fumble but Colin Arie recovered the ball at the LG 34. A 5-yard run by Jolley on fourth down kept the drive alive with just under a minute.
Facing another fourth down, Tate picked up 10 yards and a first down. With time still running down, Tate spiked the ball to stop the clock.
Elkins had a run up the middle to the 3-yard line and was hit and tackled.
This is where the game went crazy. Lone Grove would take their time unpiling off Elkins and then the referees didn’t get the ball set very quickly. On the play Elkins helmet came off and as the referees finally set the ball the clock expired.
Both teams started off the field and Lone Grove made it to their locker room. After some discussion, the referees brought both teams back on the field for one untimed play from the 3-yard line.
Tate took the hand off and gave the ball to Jolley a sweep. Jolley pitched the ball to Jones on a reverse and Jones found the end zone for a Panther touchdown. The Panthers went for two and Jolley raced in to cut the LG lead to 35-21 at the break.
Pauls Valley got the ball to start the second half. PV stayed on the ground with Elkins, Hamilton and Tate. Elkins picked up a first down on a fourth-down run that carried PV out near midfield.
On first down, Hamilton went straight up the field and didn’t stop. Hamilton went 53 yards for the touchdown cutting the lead to 35-28.
Lewis capped off a 10-play drive for Lone Grove with a 5-yard touchdown run to push the lead back out to 14.
A big kick off return by Hamilton gave PV great field position. A 20-yard run on fourth down by Elkins gave PV a first-and-goal at the 9. Jolley got the call on first down and got into the end zone to cut the lead to seven, 42-35.
Lone Grove marched down the field and had a first-and-goal at the 5-yard-line. The Panther defense stiffened up and stopped Lone Grove on four straight plays forcing a turn over on downs.
PV got out of the shadows of their own end zone buy couldn’t pick up a first down. PV snapped the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety and the wheels fell off after that.
Lewis scored three straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter on runs of 20, 1 and 60. Pigg added a final touchdown late to make the final 72-35.
