Balcerak wins gold at state

marie@pvdemocrat.com — After finishing as a runner-up at the last two state track meets, MaryBeth Balcerak finally took gold.

In her best jump of the season Balcerak beat the competition by two inches. She cleared a career best 5-foot 6-inches and challenged the 1985 state record of 5-foot 8-inches.

Balcerak wasn’t the only one crowned a state champ form Pauls Valley as the Lady Panthers won the Academic State Champ in Class 4A. The girls had a cumulative GPA of 3.99.

Claire Grimmett finished with a third place finish at state. She ran a 47.25 in the 300 hurdles finishing behind Erin Herchock of Dewey and Hailey Matthews of Kingfisher.

Tristen Ledbetter finished fourth in the long jump. Her last jump of 16-feet 8.25 inches moved her into the fourth spot ahead of Maddie Richards of Elgin.

Madie Caldwell finished fourth in the shot put. Her throw of 37-feet 5-inches pushed her into fourth place ahead of Kyla Martin of Fort Gibson.

Madeleine Crawford edged out Makynna Koper of Weatherford at the tape for a fifth place finish in the 800 meter run. Crawford finished in a time of 2:24.01 two tenths of a second ahead of Koper.

Crawford, Grimmett, Mady Thompson and Mariah McClellan finished sixth in the 1600 meter relay. The relay team finished in a time of 4:10.44 just behind Elgin and Plainview.

The 3200 meter relay team of Crawford, Kaylie Upton, Samantha Cozart and Grimmett finished sixth in the grueling race. PV turned in a time of 10:14.22 just behind Vinita.

Overall the Lady Panthers finished fifth in the state with 30 total points.

Plainview won their first Class 4A title with 105 points edging out Vinita who finished with 101.

This was Plainview’s third title in four years for the girls program.
