PV wins opener, falls in semis

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The No. 19 team in Class 4A won their opener in the initial Jeff Davis Memorial Spring Break Classic as Pauls Valley defeated Marietta 10-5 on Thursday. They ran into a buzz saw in the semifinals against Sulphur losing 8-2.

Against Marietta, the Panthers jumped out quickly with three runs in the first and rode the arm of freshman pitcher Tyler Butts for a 10-5 win.

Ty Knight got things going for PV with a single to start the game. Drake O’Bryant had a sacrifice bunt and was safe at first on an error.

Daniel Brown would single home Knight and Treston Williams singled scored both O’Bryant and Brown for a 3-0 lead.

PV added two more in the second as Blake LeMay was hit with a pitch and Butts followed with a hard hit ball off the first baseman’s glove. Both came around to score on an error for a 5-0 lead.

Butts was on cruise control through the first three innings. He gave up two singles in the second but struck out five in those first three innings.

Marietta scored three in the fourth as they had three singles and all three scored to cut the lead to 5-3.

PV responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain their five-run lead.

Marietta would plate two more runs in the fifth off a couple of PV errors.

PV responded again with two runs of their own off a couple of singles by Brown, Williams, Cody Ward and Tanner Hamilton.

Butts would retire the final six batters for the win.

Friday, O’Bryant got a little roughed up in the first inning by Sulphur after the Panthers had opened up a 1-0 lead on Knight’s single and David Flores RBI single.

With one out Hunter reached on an error and Ryan was hit with a pitch. Douglass singled home Hunter and with two outs Cole singled home Ryan and Douglas. Shane would reach on an infield hit and both he and Cole would score on Nick’s single.

PV settled in after that on defense and shut our Sulphur till the sixth when the scored three more runs.
