Shooting woes cost PV in Tournament

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The Pauls Valley Panthers shot a dismal 29-percent in the Marietta Tournament opener with Healdton and that cost them in a 53-44 loss to the Bulldogs.

Pauls Valley really struggled from beyond the arc in both games shooting 7-of-46 from the three-point area including 5-of-27 in the loss to Healdton.

PV led by as many as 8 in the game and looked like they were going to put the game away but Healdton just kept fighting back.

With Pauls Valley holding a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, Colton Dunn took over for Healdton scoring 14 of his game high 25 points.

Chaz Carr had 13 points for Healdton going 6-for-6 from the field.

Treston Williams scored a team high 22 points to lead the Panthers.

Healdton 8 12 10 23 - 53

PV 8 11 12 13 - 44

Healdton – Colton Dunn 25, Chaz Carr 13, Tyler Shaw 6, Chris Choate 6, Cameron Webb 3.

Pauls Valley – Treston Williams 22, Carter Tate 7, Matt Perry 5, Greg Balcerak 4, Breydan Jackson 3, Shedrick Murray 3.

Pauls Valley continued their shooting woes from beyond the arc on Friday shooting 10-percent from 3-point land going 2-of-19 in a 45-43 loss in overtime to the host school Marietta in the consolation semifinals.

Despite the shooting woes it was foul trouble that ultimately cost PV in the loss. Pauls Valley committed 25 fouls 17 of those in the second half at overtime. That allowed Marietta to go to the line 32 times in the game and they made PV pay to an extent as they hit 23 of them.

Zac Neely was a recipient of most of those foul shots shooting 13, three more than the entire Panther squad.

Pauls Valley looked to be in control of the game with a seven point lead heading into the final quarter. But just like Thursday, PV could hold on as Marietta out scored PV 14-7 to tie the game and send it into over time.

Marietta edged PV in overtime for the two-point win. Neely led all scorers with 20 for Marietta. Williams and Perry both had 11 for Pauls Valley.

Pauls Valley will look to regroup at Lexington on Tuesday as PV continues their long road trip.
