PV ladies survive at Little Axe

marie@pvdemocrat.com — After taking an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter the Pauls Valley Lady Panthers had to hold on late for a 51-47 win at Little Axe.

Kallie McMahan’s three gave PV their largest lead of the game a minute into the fourth quarter. The Lady Panther would go cold over the next five minutes.

Little Axe scored 8 straight to cut the lead to three with less than 40 seconds to go in the game.

Jessica Richardson would hit two of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to give PV a cushion. PV would survive the scare for a four-point win.

The game was back-and-forth over the first 10 minutes. The Lady Panthers scored the first six points of the game as Mary Beth Balcerak, Jessica Richardson and Kallie McMahan each had baskets.

Little Axe finally got on track at the five-minute mark with Clark and Watson hitting back-to-back three pointers in a 10-0 run that gave the Indians a 10-6 lead. Richardson scored a late basket to cut the Little Axe lead to 10-8 at the end of the quarter.

Balcerak tied the game early in the second quarter and Claire Grimmett tied the game at 12 two minutes into the second after Little Axe had taken a 12-10 lead.

That would be the last lead change of the game as PV scored a 10-2 run that gave them a 20-14 lead a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

PV would slowly inch their way out to a seven-point lead early in the second half. Little Axe would close the gap to three mid way through the quarter.

The two team would battle back-and-forth over the final four minutes with PV pulling away late for an 8-point lead. Jazmine Mudhar had six points in the final four minutes to lead the offense.

McMahan hit a three early in the fourth quarter to give PV their largest lead of the game at 11, 49-38. Little Axe went on an 8-0 run over the next 6 minutes to cut the lead to three.

Richardson would hit 2-of-4 from the line in the final 25 seconds to give PV just enough cushion for a four-point win.
