Playoffs begin Friday for area teams

Pauls Valley Democrat — Three of the four Garvin County teams still in the playoffs will be at home when the 2013 postseason begins Friday. Wynnewood, Elmore City-Pernell and Lindsay are all at home while Stratford goes on the road to Talihina, the No. 4 team in Class A.

Unlike district play, the playoffs bring a new challenge for coaches every week. An unfamiliarity with the teams and limited film make it difficult for teams to see just what another team has.

“In district, we may see a team three or four times on film before we play them,” Wynnewood coach Brad Osteen said. “Now we get one game or may two games on the team.”

It will be a battle of Savages in Wynnewood Friday night as the Quinton Savages come to town.

The Savages are led on offense by tailback Kirby Needham who averages 91 yards per game. Peyton Knell averages 83 yards passing and as a team Quinton averages 233 yards per game and 20 points.

The defense is led by Jake Lemons who is averaging 13 tackles per game.

District runner-up Elmore City-Pernell is facing a team that like ECP had to win last week to get a home playoff game. The Sallisaw Central Tigers lost their game and finished third.

They are led on offense by dual threat quarterback Aaron Busch. Busch has over 1002 rushing and passing with 19 touchdowns. Tanner Poindexter is another threat out of the backfield as his Girty at receiver.

Philpott is the leader on defense for the Tigers.

Games kick off at 7:30 p.m. at the three different high schools in the area.
