In a wild game against rival Purcell, the Pauls Valley Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead only to watch it disappear in a 6-run fourth by the Purcell Dragons.
Pauls Valley picked up a couple of insurance runs in the top of the sixth and held on for a 9-7 win to capture the title. The Panthers last won a district baseball title in 2009 when they beat Byng.
Drake O’Bryant had a good day on the mound pitching seven strong innings. He gave up 7 runs, none of which were earned, on eight hits. He struck out 10 and walked only two batters.
The Panther defense was credited with all the runs as they committed seven errors in the game including four in the 6-run fourth by the Dragons.
The Panthers batted first after losing the coin toss to start the game.
PV responded with three runs to start the game. O’Bryant led off the game with a walk and Ty Knight followed with a single. With one out Daniel Brown doubled home both runners. David Flores then singled home Brown and PV took a 3-0 lead.
In the first three innings, O’Bryant gave up one hit and struck out six as PV took their three run lead into the fourth.
Tanner Hamilton reached on an error to start the inning for PV. Jesse Williamson walked and O’Bryant reached on an error to load the bases.
Knight watched as the first two pitches he seen missed the strike zone. The third pitch did not and Knight the ball as hard as anyone has hit a ball at PV in recent years.
He blasted the ball over the center field wall and it seemed to still be rising as it cleared the fence for a grand slam and a 7-0 lead.
Purcell responded rallying for six runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Hamilton reached on an error to start the inning in front of Frankenburg’s single. Elderman doubled scoring both runners. Riley then singled scoring Elderman.
Playbak then reached on a fielder’s choice. Northcutt reached on an error. Haursey singled scoring Playbak. Bay then singled home two run as Purcell cut the lead to 7-6.
Pauls Valley got back on track in the sixth. Williamson singled to start the inning. O’Bryant reached on an error on a fielder’s choice ball hit to third.
Purcell intentional walked Knight to load the bases. Joe Kyle Foster grounded out scoring Williamson. O’Bryant took third and scored on a passed ball.
Purcell got out of the inning but not before two very important insurance runs crossed the plate for a 9-6 lead.
Northcutt started the bottom half of the sixth with a single. He was stealing on the pitch and O’Bryant threw to first but the throw to second got away and Northcutt moved around to third.
Northcutt would score on Haursey’s sacrifice fly to right cutting the lead to 9-7.
That’s where the game would end as O’Bryant retired the side in order in the seventh sending PV to the regional tournament.
Knight lead the offensive charge for PV with two hits and four RBI’s. Williamson, Flores, Brown and Williams all had hits in the game.
Elderman and Riley both had two hits each to lead the Purcell offense.
