Gonzales leads ECP past Stratford

marie@pvdemocrat.com — Twenty-eight unanswered points by the Elmore City-Pernell Badgers in the first half lifted them to a home playoff game as they defeated Stratford 35-21 at Wheeler Field in EC.

After Stratford had taken an early 7-0 lead on Kyler Wade’s 15-yard touchdown reception from Chase Bradstreet, the next 18 minutes was the Badgers.

Dereck Medford got thins going when he intercepted Bradstreet and returned the ball 42 yards for the touchdown.

It was then the Edgar Gonzales show as the senior scored on runs of 35, 29 and 45 to give the Badgers a 28-7 lead.

Wade and Bradstreet would hook up again just before intermission on a two-yard TD pass as Stratford cut the lead to 28-14.

Gonzales would strike again in the third this time from 30 yards out giving ECP a 35-14 lead.

Matt Blackburn would score on a 1-yard run for the Bulldogs late in the third cutting the final margin to 14 points.

“I thought the guys played hard and competed well,” Stratford head coach Michael Blackburn said. “The defense played well for the most part against a very good team but just gave up too many big plays and offensively we just didn’t make enough plays to keep drives going.”

Chase Bradstreet finished with 238 total yards, 104 rushing and 134 passing to lead the Bulldogs. Wade finished with 106 yards receiving.

Wade led the Stratford defense with 11 tackles with Kyle Potter and Brant Wade both finishing with 9.

Both teams will begin playoff action Friday as ECP hosts Central Sallisaw while Stratford travels to Talihina.

“Everybody is now 0-0 and once you get in the playoffs you never know what is going to happen,” Blackburn said. “We will go on the road and play a very good Talihina team this week and we are excited about the opportunity and excited about being back in the playoffs.”
