marie@pvdemocrat.com — The battle between the No. 1 team in Class A and the No. 2 team in Class A lived up to its billing in Wayne Friday night.

The two heavy weights went nose to nose and took each others best shot.

In the end the last man standing was Levi Phillips. The Wynnewood Savages place kicker nailed all five extra point kicks to give the Savages a 35-34 win over the Bulldogs.

Phillips wasn’t the only hero for the Savages on the night. Jacob Ivey caused a Wayne fumble in the middle of the fourth quarter and Tyler Keith recovered the loose ball in the end zone giving Wynnewood the lead for good.

The game went just like a movie script. Wayne would scored then Wynnewood would score then Wayne would score then Wynnewood back and forth all night.

Sam Martin got the scoring started for Wayne with a 46-yard run. The kick failed and Wayne led 6-0.

Wynnewood responded with a 53-yard pass from Jace Brown to Gus Reinert. Phillips booted through the extra point for a 7-6 lead.

Wayne back Louden Johnson would then score on a 45-yard pass from Martin.

Wynnewood’s Phillips would haul in a 59-yard pass from Brown for a 14-12 lead.

Ryan Welch would catch a 66-yard pass from Martin and Wayne finally got an extra point through for a 19-14 lead.

Knowles would then score the Savages first rushing touchdown on a 39-yard run as WW regained the lead at 21-19.

Martin would score just before half time and Johnson’s conversion run game Wayne a 27-21 lead at the break.

Knowles would start the second half by capping off a drive with a 3-yard run and a 28-27 lead.

Johnson would answer with a 62-yard touchdown run as Wayne regained the lead at 34-28.

After several defensive stands, Wayne had the ball deep in their own territory. Jacob Ivey got good penetration into the Wayne backfield forcing a fumble in the end zone.

Tyler Keith fell on the loose ball scoring a touchdown for Wynnewood and tieing the game at 34. Phillips was true on the extra point kick giving WW a one-point lead and win.

Sam Martin had a big night for Wayne with two rushing touchdowns on runs of 46 and 32 and two passing touchdowns a 45 yarder and a 66 yarder.

Jace Brown had a big night throwing the ball with 250 yards on 12-of-17 with two touchdowns a 53 yarder to Gus Reinert and a 59 yarder to Phillips.

Trey Knowles finished with 89 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored on runs of 39 and 3 to lead the ground attack.

The win puts Wynnewood in the drives seat as far as the district title goes. All that left in front of them in a dangerous Wewoka Tiger team.

The Savages will play Wewoka at home next week in their final regular season home contest.
