Panthers hold off Savages

marie@pvdemocrat.com — Pauls Valley hit fourteen-of-eighteen from the free throw line, including 9 straight at the end of the game to lift the Panthers to a 72-60 win over rival Wynnewood Tuesday on the Savages home court.

The game was back-and-forth for most of the game with Pauls Valley grabbing an early lead behind three 3-pointers from senior Genesis Meave. The Panthers hit four 3-pointers on five possessions in the middle of the first quarter but the Savages Gus Reinert responded with three baskets in the paint to close the gap.

Pauls Valley gave themselves a little breathing room in the second quarter as Balcerak and Ty Moore both hit three point baskets. Wynnewood continued to fight and Reinert and Jace Brown kept Wynnewood within striking distance combining for 11 of WW’s 15 points in the quarter. Carter Tate hit a three pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter to push the Panthers lead up to 38-32 at the break.

Pauls Valley went through a scoring lull to start the second half and Wynnewood took advantage. The Savages gained the lead at one-point in the third quarter behind 8 points from Levi Phillips. Meave’s 3-pointer near the end of the period gave PV a 48-47 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.

Pauls Valley’s pressure defense continued to hound WW in the fourth quarter. The Panthers took advantage of some timely baskets and then put the game away from the charity stripe with nine straight late for a 12-point win.

Pauls Valley finished 12-of-23 from behind the arc but could only manage to hit 11-of-28 from inside the arc. Meave was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc and finished with a game high 18 points. Sanders finished 6-of-8 from two-point land and had 15 while Ty Moore and Carter Tate both finished in double figures with 14 and 12 respectively.

Levi Phillips had 15 points to lead the Savages while Brown and Reinert had 12 and 11 respectively.
