marie@pvdemocrat.com — It wasn’t the start that the Pauls Valley Panthers had hoped for but a solid second half give coach Bill Green and coaching staff hope.

Four first half turnovers led to a 28-2 half time lead for the Racers. PV responded a touchdown to open the second half.. Newcastle got on track again scoring a pair of touchdowns including one in the final minute for a 42-10 win.

Zack Burks had a big game for the Racers scoring three times on runs of 6, 22 and 7 yards. He also had a 55-yard touchdown run called back.

Newcastle jumped out to a 28-0 lead before PV got a safety when quarterback Casey Freeman kicked the ball out of the back of the endzone after the ball was snapped over his head.

PV had a chance to score again in the final minute of the half. The moved inside the 30-yard line but Carter Tate was sacked and knocked out of the game on a third down play.

The Panthers settled for a 51-yard field goal attempt by Manny Colmenares. Colmenares kick was on line but the ball hit the cross bar and fell back as the quarter ended with PV trailing 28-2.

The Panthers came out of the locker room fired up and forced the Racers to punt the ball.

Coleton Jolley replaced Tate at quarterback and led the Panthers down the field to pay dirt. Runs by Tori Martin and Jake Hamilton and a couple of Newcastle penalties moved the ball across mid field.

Facing a third-and-7 Jolley rolled to his right and threw a strike to Taner Campbell for a touchdown. The throw and catch covered 32 yards and Colmenares kick gave PV 10 straight points and cut the lead to 28-10.

Newcastle would score late in the third quarter on a long pass play and then again late for a 42-10 win.

The Panthers will look to rebound next week on the road at Bethany. The Bronchos lost to Blanchard 46-14.
