Maysville to play first 11-man game

marie@pvdemocrat.com — The 1-0 Maysville Warriors will take their act on the road this week as they travel to Duncan to face the Empire Bulldogs.

Both teams had impressive wins last week over quality opponents.

Former Maysville coach Tony Roberts has 8 returning starters on both sides of the ball. It showed on both sides of the ball as the Bulldog offense churned out over 450 yards while the defense held Snyder to 161.

“They are a tough squad,” Maysville head coach Richard Norman said. “They return a bunch of guys off last year’s team and it was a good squad.”

Leading the way on offense is Dillon Twigg. Twigg played H-back a season ago but has moved to quarterback where he had 290 yards. He had 237 yards on the ground on 13 carries with three touchdowns and 59 yards through the air with two more touchdowns.

“Their key player is their quarterback/running back (Twigg),” Norman said. “He’s little bitty, but he can fly.”

Stephen Price gives the Bulldogs offense a potent 1-2 punch. Price had over 1,100 yards last year and got off to a good start last week with 137 yards and two touchdowns.

With all five starters in the trenches returning that makes life for Twigg and Price a little easier. Four-year starters David Couch and Jacob Wilson help anchor that offensive line.

“They are big and physical up front and they have speed in the backfield,” Norman said. “They are a little bit scary.”

Maysville will now make the transition back to their 11-man play book and look to go 2-0 on the season for the first time in a while.
