O’Bryant pitches PV to opening day win

Mike Arie
Pauls Valley Democrat — Pauls Valley’s Drake O’Bryant pitched a one-hitter Friday to lead the Panthers to a 16-1 win over Dibble on both teams opening games of the 2013 season.

O’Bryant had a no hitter through three innings but gave up a bloop single in the fourth that led to Dibble’s only run of the game.

O’Bryant finished with eight strikeouts and walked four batters in the run-rule shortened game.

The bats were alive for Pauls Valley as they pounded out 13 hits led by Ty Knight who had a single, double and a triple. Cody Ward was also 3-for-3 with a double. Jesse Williamson and Tyler Butts both had multiple hits in the game.

Knight got the game started with a single and took second on an error. He reached third on a passed ball as O’Bryant drew a walk. Knight scored on a sac fly by David Flores. Daniel Brown would then single home O’Bryant. Tyler Butts was hit with a pitch and Treston Williams walked to load the bases.

Tanner Hamilton hit into a fielder’s choice but Brown and Butts both scored. Williamson then singled and Ward doubled scoring both Hamilton and Williamson. Knight would come back up in the inning and double home Ward as PV scored 7 runs in the opening inning.

The Panthers batted around again in the second this time scoring six runs. Flores got things started with a single. Brown would draw a base on balls just ahead of Butts’ RBI single. Williams would then walk, as did Hamilton to load the bases. Butts would score on a passed ball and Williams would cross home plate on Ward’s single.

With runners at second and third Knight laced one down the third base line and got all the way around to third for a triple scoring two runs and giving PV a 13-0 lead.

O’Bryant’s perfect game went out the window in the second when he walked a batter. He finished up the inning with a strikeout his third of the game.

For the first time in the game the Panthers didn’t bat around in an inning but they did send eight men to the plate. Brown got the inning started with a base on balls. Butts followed with a single. Brown scored on Williams ground out to second.

Hamilton walked to put runners at the corners and Williamson double home both runners for a 16-0 lead.

The starters went to the bench in the bottom of the third allowing the backups to get in on the action. O’Bryant gave up his second walk of the game in the inning but no damage was done as he got a roller Joe Kyle Foster at second to end the inning.

Pauls Valley didn’t do any damage in the top of the fourth. Colin Arie reached on a hit by pitch but was out at second on a fielder’s choice.

O’Bryant walked his third batter of the evening to start the bottom half of the fourth and it came back to haunt him. A bloop single followed and another base on balls loaded the bases. A passed ball allowed the runner from third to score ending the shutout.

O’Bryant bounced back to strike out the side as the game ended with PV in front 16-1.

Pauls Valley is on the road Saturday at Little Axe in an early afternoon game. They will return home Monday for their season opener with Comanche. They are at home again on Tuesday with Atoka.

PV will finish up next week with a game at the Bricktown Ball Park as they face Bethany.
