Fifth-graders raise $2K in bake sale to benefit EF-5 tornado victims

NORMAN — Miles Balkman and a group of fellow fifth-graders at Eisenhower Elementary proved this summer that no local resident is too young to make a contribution to Moore recovery.

Balkman and his friends joined together to host a bake sale outside a local Walmart, and parent Toni Blouch contributed her experience designing and ordering T-shirts for Eisenhower to make a special benefit T-shirt to add to the group’s merchandise.

In all, they raised $2,221 that will be donated to Plaza Towers and Briarwood elementary schools in the coming week.

“Me and my friends thought maybe we could give the kids money for more clothes or food and stuff for school,” Balkman said. “We made snickerdoodles, and at the sale, some people drove by and came back just to buy our cookies.”

Blouch said shirts were sold during the bake sale and to Eisenhower families and friends through word of mouth and Facebook.

“I’ve done enough T-shirts for Eisenhower that I knew the people at the shirt company well. We’ve run out of shirts since we started the sale, but if I got an overwhelming response, I could order more,” Blouch said.

The same group of Eisenhower students first tried relief fundraising in August following the state’s wildfires, raising approximately $700 for those whose homes were destroyed.

As far as Moore is concerned, Balkman’s hopes are simple.

“I hope that the money is enough and that they can get what they need so they can have a good school year,” he said.
