Family a big part of DA’s drive

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — His own family’s history has played a big part in placing Corey Miner on a path that’s led to work as a prosecutor in the district attorney’s office in Pauls Valley.

The 42-year-old Miner has gone from working the streets as a law enforcement officer to being a relatively new assistant district attorney joining with Tara Portillo and Laura Shaeffer in the DA’s office here.

Wanting to go to a rural city, like Pawnee where he grew up, Miner said he’s thrilled about the opportunity work as a prosecutor in Pauls Valley.

“I like trying cases, talking to other attorneys; I like talking to the public,” Miner said.

“You can have a jury trial like a trial is supposed to be with 12 people sitting in judgment of someone accused of a crime,” he said.

“You feel like you can be an attorney here.”

As for his childhood, Miner was 3 years old when his father, serving as a police officer in Norman, was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Later he served in the Army before going to school to become a police officer himself. During that time he delivered furniture during the day while attending night classes.

He worked as a cop in Norman for about a year before serving as a state trooper from 1999 to 2007.

Miner then earned his bachelor’s degree in finance, while minoring in Eastern European history. He later earned his law degree in 2011.

Wanting to be a trial attorney, Miner worked for Oklahoma City defense attorney Garvin Isaacs for about a year and a half.

It was that experience that made an impact on Miner.

“I learned the fundamentals of the law from one of the top criminal attorneys in the country,” he said.

He then went to work for Greg Mashburn, who is the district attorney overseeing the three-county region that includes Garvin County.

Initially he served in McClain County before making the move to Pauls Valley.

Miner is married with two children, both girls ages 7 and 19 months.

  • ‘Rio 2’ average effort, but still a family win

Though Hollywood will never truly abandon milking characters for franchises well past the expiration date, I will say that even the most mediocre series seems to be getting at least more tolerable than in the past.
