Donors the thing with blood drives

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Donors helping out will be the big thing with a couple of blood drives this week in both Pauls Valley and Wynnewood.

Both are supporting the Oklahoma Blood Institute as here in PV it will be a part of the KATT Radio’s annual blood drive.

The local drive is set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at Tio’s Mexican Restaurant in Pauls Valley, located at the corner of Grant and Indian Meridian streets.

Even earlier is a blood drive at Landmark Bank in Wynnewood scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The weekend drive in PV involves KATT Radio, which in 1985 became the first media outlet in the state to partner with Oklahoma Blood Institute.

Now, 29 years later, KATT Radio continues to especially encourage donors to give blood during the critical-need month of January.

More than 29,550 Oklahomans have given blood during the drive’s history.

“KATT Radio provides the enthusiasm needed at this critical time to encourage community support of blood donation,” said John Armitage, M.D., Oklahoma Blood Institute president and CEO.

“In January, our typical, three-day supply of blood for Oklahomans in need, is susceptible to weather that can deter donors,” he said.

“KATT has always stepped up to promote the need to get out and give. We especially ask KATT listeners — and all Oklahomans — to take an hour to provide life-saving blood.”

One lucky donor will win a Skillet guitar courtesy of Atlantic Records and Rock 100.5 the KATT.

Donors will receive KATT Radio 29th annual blood drive T-shirts, while supplies last.

They will also receive an OBI baseball cap, health screenings and Donor Rewards points, redeemable for merchandise and gift certificates at OBI’s online store.

The mid-week drive in Wynnewood will include donors receiving limited edition “Feel the Love” Oklahoma T-shirts and a hot/cold gel pack.

Any donor who wishes to support the Global Blood Fund can forgo the gel pack.

In turn, Oklahoma Blood Institute will make a monetary contribution of similar value to the Global Blood Fund.

Those thinking about donating are reminded OBI provides every drop of blood used by patients in some 144 medical facilities in Oklahoma, including Pauls Valley General Hospital.

Healthy adults, 16 and older, are encouraged to donate. Donations can be made every 56 days and take about an hour.
